Protein Powders – Whey or Plant based?

The general idea is that protein powders are solely for body builders or athletes, and then dismiss them.

Protein powders often contain unwanted ingredients, such as sucralose or aspartame, which should be avoided at all costs.  They should not substitute a meal, but they are good ways to boost the amount of protein in your diet and meals.

Protein is something that makes our stomachs feel fuller and makes you feel satisfied for a longer time, and consequently makes you less prone to cravings and energy dips.  This is why a small bit of protein should be added to every meal.

The best protein powders to use are either whey or plant based protein powders.

Whey Protein

Whey protein powders are dairy based, and they are also the ones that most people are familiar with.  If you are trying to avoid dairy, or you have an allergy to dairy, this is not the option for you.  Whey powders come in a variety of forms, such as concentrate, isolate and hydrolysed.

To ensure you get the best option for your health and for your body, look for a whey protein powder that ticks the following boxes:

– Organic

– From grassfed animals

– No added artificial sweeteners, colourings or flavourings

– Has good raw ingredients

Plant Based Protein Powders

Plant based protein powders are a non-dairy option, and is a healthy alternative for anyone who is either trying to avoid dairy or who is allergic.

Non-dairy options include : pea, mixed seed, hemp and brown rice powders.  These all vary in protein content, taste and nutrient profile.  To get the one that you like, experimentation is not a bad option.

Brown rice and pea powders contain roughly 80% protein.  Mixed seed and hemp powders typically contain less protein at around 40-50%.  However, depending on the mixture, do contain omega 3 & 6 fats and plant fibres.

How Can You Use Protein Powders?

Protein powders are a smart way to boost the protein in your diet, and you can add it to your diet in the next ways:

– Mix into your porridge or add it over your morning cereal

– Stir it into your yoghurt with seeds and berries

– Put it in a fruit or vegetable smoothie

– Add it to your baking, such as pancakes or muffins

– Blend it into your soup

– Use it as a standalone shake

Protein powders should never replace a meal, but it is a good idea to add it to your meals if you are needing to add protein to your diet, gain weight or muscle and have a very active lifestyle.
